Go for it
The world needs your idea in it.
Growing up as a millennial was an inspiring time for technology. I remember when the App Store came out, how many cool and fun apps there were. When Ruby on Rails got popular, so many cool websites and startups were created.
But it seems like over the past decade, everything has centralized, consolidated, and just kind of become… boring.
Of course, there is the enshittification of everything. This isn’t exactly a post about enshittification. I don’t want to talk about good ideas getting worse, but instead the dirth of exciting ideas in the first place.
Everyone seems to have an idea they really want to build, but they’re worried it can’t be some B2B AI based unicorn idea.
But the world doesn’t need more SaaS unicorns. See above about enshittification; people are getting tired of such apps.
There’s an appetite for indie apps, indie games, indie products. I know I’m not the only one who gets excited about some cool niche product I find online. Something that serves my exact need just because someone thought it would be cool to build.
There’s definitely a bigger hurdle these days. People have app fatigue, everyone is concerned about ai generated applications, and it’s harder than ever to cut through the noise. Take it from me, it’s really hard to reach your audience these days. I constantly get dismissed as some AI generated scam, despite my genuine intentions and hand written application.
But in lieu of that fact, or more accurately because of that fact, the word needs more passionate entrepreneurs. People looking to solve a problem, not because it will be lucrative or scalable, but because the world would be a better place with that problem solved.
For me that problem was language learning. Ask 10 of your friends which language they’re learning, and 9 of them will respond with a language (5 of them will probably be Spanish). Yet if you ask how it’s going, it’s never going well, and most of them have given up.
Languages are hardwired into our brains. They are not nearly as difficult to learn as the current methods would suggest. So I set out to (and succeeded) in developing a way to make it simple to learn a language.
Starting a company is not going to be an easy road. It will require some sacrifice. But those go for all the best things in life.
If you have a crazy idea, or a crazy passion, do something about it. Go for it. Be willing to fail time and time again. Bring your full self, and do something different
Because the world needs more diversity of thought. It needs people willing to walk their own path, and branch out from the mainstream.
