Making Spaced Repetition Enjoyable with Phrasing
In this episode of Phrasing FM, the host dives deep into spaced repetition (SRS), declaring that "memory is a solved problem." While SRS systems like Anki are incredibly effective for long-term retention, many feel stressful and hard to maintain. Phrasing is designed as an SRS tool that prioritizes enjoyment and habit formation, so users actually want to keep coming back.
00:14 – Spaced Repetition Basics
SRS has existed for over a century and works reliably: consistent use means you remember anything.
The real challenge isn't the algorithm — it's building a sustainable daily habit.
01:56 – The Problem with Traditional SRS
Tools like Anki are powerful but often boring, tiring, and stressful.
Users force themselves through sessions and feel drained afterward, making consistency difficult.
03:38 – Phrasing’s Philosophy
Goal: Build an SRS you want to use, even if it slightly compromises pure algorithmic optimality.
More reviews done happily > fewer reviews done grudgingly.
05:00 – Key Features That Make Reviews Addictive
Engaging, colorful UI with animations, audio, and dynamic elements — feels like using an app, not doing work.
Adaptive difficulty (Zone of Proximal Development): Keeps reviews challenging but not overwhelming, adjusting based on your performance.
No visible due dates or review counters during sessions (prevents gaming the system or hitting arbitrary limits).
Smart language interleaving + "momentum" for multi-language learners: Surprise switches create dopamine hits without losing batching benefits.
13:40 – Conclusion Memory retention is solved with SRS. The innovation in Phrasing is making the process enjoyable, sustainable, and addictive so consistency becomes natural. This turns a powerful but underused tool into something transformative.
SEO keywords: spaced repetition made fun, memory is a solved problem, Phrasing app SRS, enjoyable Anki alternative, habit-forming language learning, zone of proximal development SRS.

00:00 All right. Welcome back to another episode of Phrasing FM, a podcast where I talk about languages and my experience building an app to learn them.
00:14 So today I want to talk about spaced repetition. I have a lot of thoughts on spaced repetition. I had a lot of thoughts before I built Phrasing and I have even more thoughts after building Phrasing. I would say Phrasing is a spaced repetition tool. I think it's a lot more than that, but it's definitely very heavily based in spaced repetition.
01:12 And spaced repetition is something that's been around for now hundreds of years... And they're incredibly effective. One of the things that I always say is memory is a solved problem. We all struggle to remember things. But the thing is, we know how to fix that. We have the technology to remember anything we want. If you put something into a spaced repetition system and you use it, you will remember it full stop.
02:58 However, a lot of the applications out there are just really stressful to use. They're really difficult to build a habit with. They're really boring when you do them. And when I finish a really long Anki session, I don't feel great. I feel tired, I feel stressed, I feel agitated.
03:38 And so the main goal with Phrasing was, I want to build a spaced repetition system that you want to use. I'm willing to compromise a little bit on the efficacy of the algorithm if it means that you're going to want to keep coming back every single day.
05:00 One of the things that I think is very important is just having a very engaging UI. You know, it's very colorful. It's got moving colors, there's animations... It doesn't feel like you're doing reviews, it feels like you're using an application.
06:05 Another thing that we really focus on is keeping you in that zone of proximal development... If you have a day where you are just remembering everything, we're going to give you harder cards... Likewise, if you're getting a bunch of things wrong, we're going to show you easier cards.
11:09 And if you like learning languages, if you're learning multiple languages, this interleaving is so dopaminergic that it is crazy... The excitement I get when every single language comes up is palpable.
13:40 Memory is a solved problem. If you want to remember something, you can. We have the technology. And so the only thing that you need to do is be consistent with your habit... That's the big quote unquote innovation behind Phrasing.
18:45 It's already been about twenty minutes, so if you made it this far, thanks for listening. Check out Phrasing and share it with your friends. Hope you enjoyed the podcast and I'll see you in the next one.
