00:00 All right. Welcome back to another episode of Phrasing FM, a podcast where I talk about languages and my experience building an app to learn them.

00:14 So today I want to talk about word learning stages. This isn't an official term. It's just something that I call it in my head. But when you're learning new words in a language, it's not this binary state. It's not like you start learning a word, you don't remember it, and then one day you remember it and you understand everything about it.

00:32 For me, it's really helpful to break it up into the different stages. And I think if you know that these different stages exist, it can make it a lot easier for you to learn new vocabulary as well.

00:47 And so Phrasing is largely based on spaced repetition. So I see new words in a flashcard context. And if there's a new word that comes up, the first thing I try to do is not even understand the meaning of it, not understand how it fits into the sentence. I just try to brute force memorize the sounds.

01:22 I want to get to a point where if I see the word again in a couple of minutes, I can recall the sounds. I'm leaning on my short term memory. It's just what can I do to remember the characters, the sounds, the syllables that come together to form this word.

02:29 Normally I can do that within the first day, maybe the first week, depending on the word and how often I see it. And once you get to the point where you see the word and you can pull this out of your short term memory, that's when I start to attach meaning to the word.

03:09 So I say, okay, this is the sounds. What did that mean? Again, a lot of the times I'll remember the word, I'll remember the sounds, but I have no idea what it means because I haven't even tried to save this information yet. For me, that's step two.

04:08 And then when I start seeing the word again and I start getting it right a little bit, I'll start to associate it with the words around it. So I'm no longer just focused on this one word, but how does this word tie into the word before, and how does it tie into the word afterwards? How does this word relate to other words in the expression?

06:01 And then from there, this is a little bit harder to do with just one word. But in Phrasing we do de-duplicate words. So if you have a word in two different expressions, we'll link them together... And even if you don't have an application that does this, you'll see this word in other contexts.

07:12 And then finally you get to this point where you realize, wait a minute, I recognize part of this word. I know this other word in this other form. And you really start to see the word everywhere, and you see it conjugated in different forms... And I feel like that's when things really start to snap.

08:52 So really, really zoom in on the word when you're beginning. If anything, when I'm learning a new word, I feel like I have blinders on. I'm not paying attention to the other words in the expression. I'm not paying attention to the grammar. I'm not even paying attention to the meaning. It's just, what are these sounds?

09:43 But if you trust the process and you just go one step at a time. It can be really stress free. There is a path to understanding all of it and just focus on the most important things first.
